Some Tips for Outsmarting Anxiety and Social Phobia

Panic or Anxiety Attack (out of the blue for no apparent reason):

Know that you are not dying or going insane and that the panic only lasts up to ten minutes.

Stop what you are doing and sit patiently or excuse yourself to get up and walk around.

Wait it out. Don’t fight or try to control the symptoms; it rarely helps.

Tell yourself it is only a panic attack and other than that, nothing bad is happening or is going to happen.

Be honest if someone asks. Everyone has physical problems or personal issues. You’re not alone.

Social Phobia (panic or fear in the presence of one or more people):

Focus your performance or actions outward, toward the audience.

Focus on the other people as though scrutinizing them.

Don’t look directly at the task you are doing with your hands.

If right handed, try using your left, or vice versa.

Hold your breath during the task (like signing your name, etc.)

Let your shoulders fall (relax) like the cut strings of a marionette puppet.

Talk, whistle or sing while doing it.

Focus on the destination of the task (not on here and now) and make a beeline for it.

General Anxiety and Doomish Fear:

What is the worst that can really happen? Plan for that; now how bad is it?

Stay busy and distracted.

Help someone in need.

Seek strenuous exercise, as much as you are physically able.

Make alternate plans for your life, job, etc. even though you may not actually follow through with them in the near future.

On the Clinical Couch (if you see a doctor):

Be prepared with what you want to talk about (make a list) and then take notes on all he says.

After the session study your notes and prepare for next time.

Actually take her advice and do what she says.

Trust the doc, but ask questions and be honest with what works and what doesn’t.

Remember you are not his only or favorite patient and he is not your best friend, no matter how caring he seems; focus on overcoming your anxiety!

Now in all cases, know that God is in control, stay close to Jesus your Redeemer, and...eating chocolate can't hurt!
